Maine et Loire : the most beautiful luxury hotels of the department to discover

The 4 most beautiful hotels and guest houses in Maine-et-Loire

The department of Maine-et-Loire, named after its two main rivers, attracts millions of visitors every year, curious to discover its majestic castles and its sumptuous tapestries, but also the famous “Angevin sweetness” praised by Joachim du Bellay. Because Anjou is not only a cultural destination, but also a place for relaxing, here is our selection of the 4 most beautiful hotels and guest houses in Maine-et-Loire, to visit urgently.

  1. The Château de l’Épinay

Built in the heart of a 23-hectare natural park, halfway between Tours and Nantes, the Château de l’Épinay is located in a magnificent building constructed between the 15th and 17th centuries. It is our favorite hotel in Maine et Loire. The rooms, decorated with antique furniture cleverly combined with more contemporary touches, welcome you in a refined and warm atmosphere. All have a view of the French gardens, visible from their high mullioned windows framed with floral curtains.

In terms of activities, guests are spoilt for choice, from relaxing in the natural swimming pool overlooking the estate’s meadows, to walking or biking in the park, or taking advantage of the tennis court to work on their backhand – for a stay that’s all about getting back in shape. Health and Fitness programs, including treatments and fitness coaching, are even offered by the spa team for the most motivated. Don’t panic, if you are looking for relaxation, you can also get a massage, relax in the hammam or jacuzzi, or take part in the many workshops offered to guests: yoga, pilates, reflexology, introduction to essential oils and sophrology… There is something for everyone and the hotel is the perfect place to take a regenerating break and spend a weekend in nature.

But above all, it is impossible to miss the restaurant of the castle, L’Orangerie, where the Italian chef Gregorio proposes a mixed cuisine, drawing from both his transalpine roots and his attachment to the French soil. Thus, the menu includes some specialties from his native country, as well as traditional bistro dishes, although always prepared with regional products; most of the fruits and vegetables used come from the estate’s vegetable garden! Finally, for those with a sweet tooth, the hotel offers the Château Brunch every first Sunday of the month; a culinary event not to be missed!

Finally, with its natural swimming pool (no treatment other than natural filtration by plants) and an environmental policy that the management is committed to, Epinay is also an ecologically committed hotel, and that counts for a lot in these times.

  1. Gaspard House

Nestled in a quiet street, a stone’s throw from the banks of the Loire, La Maison Gaspard offers visitors the opportunity to stay in its 3 apartments – each of which can accommodate up to 4 people. The atmosphere changes from one to the other, thanks to their unique decoration.

The hotel’s interior design is based on the same principles as the hotel’s, with parquet flooring in one case, and floor tiles in the other, but always with tastefully found objects. Moreover, thanks to the hotel’s decoration store, if you like certain items, you can buy them and leave with them! Finally, don’t forget to stop by the hotel’s lovely tea room and wine bar to enjoy a tartine, a homemade pastry or a local wine – depending on your mood and the time of day

  1. Castle Soucherie

Head to Beaulieu-sur-Layon, in the middle of 28 hectares of vineyards, where the lovely Château Soucherie – a historic wine estate that has become one of the region’s most beautiful wine tourism complexes – is hidden. Indeed, if it was possible to visit it for tastings during the day, around the white and red Anjou wines – Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée wines produced by the owners -, you can now also spend the night there. You can choose to sleep in the “Maison des Amis”, a real cocoon composed of 4 guest rooms with a refined decoration, or in the “Maison des Vignes”, a 4-star gîte slightly apart from the hotel, with 5 double rooms and an outdoor heated swimming pool. In short, the ideal hotel in the vineyards!

  1. Fontevraud Hotel

Between the towns of Saumur and Chinon, lies one of the most atypical establishments in Maine-et-Loire: Fontevraud, located in the heart of a Royal Abbey classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thus, staying in this hotel is to have the chance to stay in the heart of a place full of history, with rooms fitted out in the former dormitory of the nuns, but especially to be able to walk around the place once the night has fallen! An extraordinary experience.

But the must of the place is undoubtedly the restaurant, a Michelin starred restaurant where the Chef Thibaut Ruggeri, serves a contemporary French cuisine highlighting the raw products of the land.
